Most houses in Portugal have more than 100 m2

The majority of family dwellings in Portugal have more than 100 square meters (m2) of floor area, according to provisional data from INE’s Census 2021, available in Marktest’s Sales Index geomarketing system and its Social Atlas of Portugal analysis.

“There are in mainland Portugal 2,027,577 classic family dwellings of habitual residence with more than 100 m2 of useful area,” says the statement from Marktest. “This figure represents 51.2% of the total number of conventional dwellings (which amounts to nearly 4 million),” the statement adds.

According to the research company, this proportion of dwellings with a larger living area registers “important differences in the territory”, adding that the Tagus River presents itself almost as a “natural barrier” to distinguish the municipalities with dwellings with a larger living area (to the North) from those with a smaller living area (to the South).

Nevertheless, Mourão, in the Alentejo, is the municipality that presents the highest proportion of dwellings with more usable area: in this locality, 77.9% of the dwellings have more than 100 m2. In Oliveira do Bairro and Miranda do Douro, this proportion reaches 74%, and in 10 other municipalities it also exceeds 70%.

On the contrary, the municipality of Amadora is the one with the lowest proportion of dwellings with more usable area: only 24.7% of its dwellings have more than 100 m2. In the councils of Moita and Barreiro this value is 30% and in 9 other councils it does not reach 40%.
